Total Alkalinity is the measure of water’s ability to prevent pH change. If the total Alkalinity is low then pH can fluctuate making it difficult to maintain and control. If Total Alkalinity is too high then the pH can be difficult to change and will keep rising. In correct Total alkalinity levels can also lead to the formation of Scale on pool surfaces, in the pipe work and in the equipment.
Total Alkalinity should be kept between 80 and 125 parts per million (ppm) for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools and 125 to150 ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools. If the Total Alkalinity of your pool water is below 80 ppm, it should be increased using Freestyle Dry Alkali (pH Buffer)
